Growing up in a very rural part of West Virginia I have seen firsthand how transportation challenges impact families. Access to health care, food, and other necessities are not readily available to those who don't have reliable transportation. That is why I support this initiative.

Rural transportation is key to building strong communities, keeping rural communities thriving, enhancing people's quality of life through access to education, jobs, doctor's appointments, social events, and whatever else it is they would like to use it for. By having a thriving public transit system in rural areas we are strengthening America from the ground up. Just imagine living in an area without public transportation - how would you get where you needed to go without depending on relatives or friends? How would your family members get where they need to go? Public transportation allows people to remain independent and active. Please support it however you can.

We have lived most of our lives in rural areas and/or have been working with rural communities, both in the U.S. and in other countries. Transportation in rural areas needs to be more accessible, more affordable, and more dependable, especially for people on limited incomes. Well-planned forms of rural public transportation can also help to reduce energy use and provide another level of protection for the environment, as well as greater safety for rural residents and greater mobility for the elderly and people with handicapping conditions.

Having grown up in rural Appalachia when it was possible to travel across the region by train or bus and now being completely dependent on my car, I strongly endorse this policy paper.
